Founded in 1980 the Glebe Greyhounds Junior Football Club gives children from five to 16 the chance to play Australian Football. Our philosophy, every player who wants a game gets a game, means that the club prides itself on ensuring all players are treated equally and that our main priority is a fun, safe and family environment.

Memories

I was a leaugie going to a private leaugie school. I played because my old man used to drink at the old Balmain Sports Club on Victoria Road at Rozelle.

Simon and John (and Gary Isherwood in later years) were really great fellas and taught me a lot. The one thing I really appreciated with Simon and Gary particularly were the emphasis they put on education.

Wow the old days, Trevor Hangan, Billy Walford and Jubilee Oval.

I occasionally wander down to Drummoyne Oval to watch the Dockers go round.

All the best to both Glebe and Balmain for the season

I was one of the Annandale Jnr's that played under coach John Coles. I can still remember turning up at Glebes Jubilee oval in the morning to go to a game and there not being enough cars to take everyone, so 12 of us kids piled into Johns VW beetle and went and had a game of football we were worried that we would not get over the bridge

Hey Les,

Great to hear from you. Just getting back to setting up the website for Season 2011 so apologies for the delay in replying.

Great story. Arie Plug has been involved with the club for years with his two sons playing. Simon & John have been back around the club - most notably we have a 30-year anniversary dinner last year where they were the primary guests of honour.

And I can't begin to imagine how they managed to shepherd you lot through that trip unscathed!!

I was one of the first players for the mighty Glebe Greyhounds in 1980 U/15's.Simon & John were great blokes, fantastic role models and they both had a positive impact in my younger years. Most of us players like Maurice Petrolo,Arie Plug,Dennis white,Brian Brodrige & John Giokas ect where brought up playing rugby leage but we took to VFL like ducks to water. One great memory was the clubs first ever interclub trip to play Queanbeyan & ACT.We jumped on the overnight deisel from central with Simon,John & 30 ratbag kids.Simon made the mistake of giving us 3 brand new sherrins to pass around on the train.By the time we passed Redfern station the first ball has gone out the window,we were up all night & "ran-a-muck" on the train. We where billited out to the ACT families for a few nights and played a couple of games against our hosts. How John & Simon got us there and back in one piece is a credit to them."Those blokes are Glebe Greyhounds".I ran into both of them last year at a Newtown Jets game at Henson park.I was with a couple of old Greyhound boys and after the game we headed over to the Henson Park Hotel for a few beers and remembered those days like it was yesterday.Like I said "Simon & John are the Glebe Greyhounds".

I was one of a group of u15 boys from the Cleveland St Boys High School team and Newtown Saints SFL (Sydney Football League) u19's that played for the Greyhounds during the first 2 seasons.

I remember our teacher at Cleveland St, Mr Wagner, who played for the Balmain SFL team, telling us about a Glebe team being short of players and that we should turn up to fill in the gaps.

The group of us went along the following Saturday, and as soon as I saw the jumpers and I said "I'm in!"

Away games were nearly always organised chaos. I recall we'd meet Simon at the ground early morning, jumping into his van, waiting for the late comers, and then simply racing around to different addresses picking up the guys that slept in!...which on a couple of occasions resulted in forfeits, which we still played of course.

Even though our Cleveland St team was very successful, and Newtown was a team with such wonderful history with a great home ground at Erskineville Oval, I loved playing in the Glebe (Collingwood) colours.

My recollection of Simon and John was that they were nice, easy going guys with very good senses of humour...but strangely enough, until I read up on the history of the club, I had no idea they were so young.

When family and time permit, I enjoy popping down to Jubilee a couple of times every season and quietly cheer the boys on from the northern fence.
